Michael Porter, Harvard Business School Professor and one of the founders of The Monitor Group (now part of Deloitte) states most companies do not have a strategy!
Per Michael Porter how you think about strategy and how you think about competition is where the disconnect starts. Many companies believe it is about being the “best” company, but what does that actually mean to be the best bank, best car manufacturer, best computer provider? There is no best as such, it more so depends on the needs your company is trying to serve.
My take here is that most companies not only do not have a strategy, if they do, they believe it is a long-term aim and something disconnected from their everyday. This is not to confuse strategy and operations, but that the two must work in unison.
